🚀 Getting Started

SkyLine is a GPS tracking system that lets you share your location with friends and family during outdoor adventures. It consists of three parts:

  • A Garmin watch app that captures your GPS location in the background
  • A phone app (iOS and Android) that syncs data from your watch and uploads it
  • A web dashboard where supporters can follow your progress on a live map

SkyLine works with most modern Garmin watches that support Connect IQ, including:

  • Fenix 6, 7, and 8 series
  • Forerunner 245, 255, 265, 955, 965
  • Enduro and Enduro 2
  • Instinct 2 series
  • Epix series

The watch must support background services in Connect IQ for automatic GPS tracking.

SkyLine is available for iOS (iPhone) with Android support coming soon. The companion app acts as a bridge between your Garmin watch and the web, syncing data via Bluetooth and uploading it when you have connectivity.

⚙️ How It Works

SkyLine uses GPS from any active Garmin activity you're recording, giving you real-time tracking with no extra battery drain. If you're not recording an activity, open the SkyLine app on your watch for standalone tracking at efficient 5-minute intervals.

The data syncs to your phone via Bluetooth whenever your phone is nearby, and then uploads to the web when you have cellular or WiFi connectivity.

SkyLine is designed to work offline:

  • Your watch continues capturing GPS points even without phone connectivity
  • Points are stored on your watch and sync when your phone is nearby
  • Your phone queues uploads and sends them when you regain signal

You won't lose any data - it just appears on the map with a delay until you're back online.

Yes! On iOS 18+ devices with satellite hardware (iPhone 13 and later), SkyLine can use satellite connectivity to send location updates when you're completely off the grid with no cellular coverage. Android satellite support coming soon.

This requires a clear view of the sky and may take a few minutes to establish a connection.

🔋 Battery & Performance

SkyLine is designed to be battery-efficient:

  • Garmin Watch: SkyLine can piggyback on GPS from any active Garmin activity (hike, run, etc.) for zero additional battery impact. Alternatively, open the SkyLine app on your watch for efficient standalone tracking at 5-minute intervals.
  • Phone: Minimal battery use since it only wakes to sync data from your watch and upload. All GPS work is done by the watch.

This design lets you track multi-day adventures without constantly charging your phone.

Yes! SkyLine runs as a background service, so you can record a hike, run, or bike ride in the native Garmin app while SkyLine captures points for sharing.

When you're recording a Garmin activity, SkyLine can use that activity's GPS data instead of its own, which is more battery efficient.

🔒 Privacy & Sharing

You have full control over who sees your tracks:

  • Public: Anyone with the link can view
  • PIN Protected: Viewers must enter a PIN you set
  • Private: Only you can see it (when logged in)

Track links are randomly generated and not indexed by search engines. You choose who to share the link with.

Yes! Anyone viewing your track can send you a message of encouragement. Messages appear on the track timeline and you'll receive a push notification on your phone.

This is a one-way communication - you can read messages but can't reply directly through SkyLine.

You can delete individual tracks from your dashboard at any time. To delete your entire account and all associated data, go to your profile settings.

Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. See our Privacy Policy for more details.
