Overview
SkyLine is a GPS tracking service that allows you to share your location with friends and family during outdoor adventures. This privacy policy explains how we handle your data.

Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Your name and email address
- Profile photo (optional)
- Apple ID information if you sign in with Apple
Location Data
When you use SkyLine to record a Line, we collect:
- GPS coordinates from your Garmin watch
- Altitude, speed, and heading data
- Timestamps for each location point
- Device information (watch model, app version)
Photos and Messages
You may optionally share:
- Photos taken during your Line (with location metadata)
- Messages from supporters viewing your Line
How We Use Your Data
We use your information to:
- Display your location on a map for people you choose to share with
- Store your Line history for your own records
- Send push notifications when you receive messages
- Improve the SkyLine service
We do not sell your data to third parties or use it for advertising purposes.
Data Sharing and Visibility
You control who sees your Lines with three visibility options:
- Public: Anyone with the link can view your Line
- PIN Protected: Viewers must enter a PIN you set
- Private: Only you can see the Line
Line links are randomly generated and not discoverable through search engines.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely on servers in New Zealand. We implement industry-standard security measures including:
- Encrypted data transmission (TLS/HTTPS) for all connections
- Secure password hashing using bcrypt
- Encrypted session data
- Security headers including Content Security Policy and HSTS
- Rate limiting to prevent abuse
- Audit logging for security-sensitive operations
- Regular security updates and monitoring
Analytics
We measure how the SkyLine website is used so we can improve it. We do this with Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool that we host ourselves on our own infrastructure — the same servers that run SkyLine. Your browsing data is never sent to Google Analytics or any other third-party analytics provider.
What we record for each page view:
- The page visited, with private identifiers removed — share links and profile links are recorded only as generic page types, never with the link itself
- Browser, operating system, device type and screen size
- Country, derived from your IP address; we do not store the IP address itself
- The referring site, if you arrived from a link elsewhere
We do not use analytics cookies, we do not track you across other websites, and we do not use any of this for advertising. Page titles that contain names you have entered — such as the name of a Line — are replaced before the data is recorded. Analytics data is not linked to your account.
If you enable "Do Not Track" in your browser, we honour it and record nothing.
Third-Party Services
SkyLine integrates with the following third-party services:
- Apple Sign In: For account authentication
- Apple Push Notification Service: For message notifications
- Garmin Connect IQ: For watch app distribution
- Mapbox: For map display in iOS and Android apps
- OpenStreetMap: For map tiles on the web
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and all associated data
- Export your Line data

Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account:
- Your profile information is permanently deleted
- All your tracks and associated data are permanently deleted
- This process is irreversible
